Glossary
Shipping terminology can sometimes be confusing and variable across the world, so we made this handy glossary of terms that are used throughout the a3 application.

Appointment |

|
|
|
|
An appointment is the name given to a job or a file in a3. An appointment houses all of the information relating to a port call such as the vessel details, cargo information, voyage particulars and companies who have an interest in the port call. |
PSDA |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Also known as the Close PDA, the PSDA (Post Sailing Disbursement Account) is the final, close estimate of port costs that is produced and sent to the Principal after the vessel has completed its operation. |
Departed |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Once a vessel operation has completed and the vessel leaves the port, the status of the appointment should be set to Departed. |
Draft PDA |
|
|
|
|
|
|
This is the status given to a Proforma DA before it is ready to be published and sent to the Principal. |
En Route |
|
|
|
|
|
|
When a vessel is on the way to a port but has not yet arrived at the port limits, the status of the appointment should be set to En Route. |
In Port |
|
|
|
|
|
|
When a vessel has entered the port limits in order to undertake the purpose of the port call, the status of the appointment should be set to In Port. |
Initial PDA |
|
|
|
|
|
|
This is the status given to an early version of a Proforma DA which is ready to be sent to the Principal in order to remit the required Prefunding |
Inquiry |
|
|
|
|
|
|
This is the name given to a Port Agency Cost Inquiry (also known as Inquiry PDA) where a Principal requires a cost estimate prior to appointing your Agency for the port call. |
Lead Agent |
|
|
|
|
|
|
This is the name of the agent (person) who is primarily responsible for the appointment. |
Nominated By |
|
|
|
|
|
|
This is the company who has nominated that your agency is to be appointed agents to the Vessel Controller, this might be the Charterer, Shipper, Receiver or in the case of an owners appointment the Vessel Controller themselves. |
Nomination |
|
|
|
|
|
|
A Nomination is the type of agency work that you are undertaking during an Appointment. For example, you may have been nominated as Full Agents by the Principal for the port costs of a vessel call, whilst also being nominated as Husbandry Agents for the Owners during the same call. a3 allows you to create multiple nominations on a single appointment. |
PDA |
|
|
|
|
|
|
PDA stands for Proforma Disbursement Account which is an estimate of the costs that will be incurred by the Principal for a port call. |
Primary Agency Office |
|
|
|
|
|
|
This is the office that is principally responsible for this appointment or it could be the first office handling the appointment if the vessel is attending multiple ports.. |
Principal |
|
|
|
|
|
|
This is the company from whom you will receive payment for disbursements associated with this nomination. This can be different than the appointment principal but for the first nomination is often the same. |
Third Party Nomination By |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Use this field to identify if a third party (such as a shipper or receiver) is the party that was responsible for asking the charterer to nominate you to the principal. |
Vessel Controller |
|
|
|
|
|
|
This is the Disponent Owner and your principal client for the appointment. The party ‘controlling’ the vessel for this appointment. In the case of a “Full Agency” appointment, they are the party paying the agency fee and the port charges. |
